Biography
Emanuele Giorgi is a statistical scientist working at the interface of methodological development and global health applications. He currently holds the 125th Anniversary Chair as Full Professor of Statistical Science at the University of Birmingham, where he leads the Geostatistics for Population Health research group within BESTEAM at the Department of Applied Health Science. He joined Birmingham in October 2025, having previously built his career at Lancaster University, where he retains an Honorary Professorship with the Centre for Health Informatics, Computing and Statistics (CHICAS).
Emanuele’s research centres on developing novel geostatistical methods for disease mapping, with particular emphasis on infectious diseases and health conditions affecting low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). A defining feature of his work is the translation of these methods into open-source R software, aimed at making advanced statistical tools transparent and accessible to researchers and practitioners worldwide.
He is also deeply engaged in capacity building across LMICs, designing training programmes, workshops, and mentoring initiatives in partnership with international organisations, and working closely with Ministries of Health to support evidence-based policymaking.
