Biography

Mohammed Rayhan (Ray) is the Ophthalmology Research Portfolio Manager at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust. He works closely alongside Professor Alastair Denniston and his research group, providing support and oversight across a broad range of data and AI related research projects across the Trust.

With a background in biomedical science, Ray graduated from the University of Warwick in 2016, before then completing a MSc in Healthcare Operations Management.

Ray joined the NHS in 2016 as a graduate trainee working on the 100,000 genomes project. He then went onto working as Operations Manager supporting the Trust’s Cancer Research portfolio.

With a interest in managing front-line clinical services, he then took on the role of Operations Manager for Cancer Services and had the day-to-day responsibility for the Trust’s GI cancer services.  This was a split role, also undertaking the role of Operations Manager for the Genomics Medicine Service (GMS).

Ray then returned back to the world of research and innovation, working on the regional research programme ‘MD-TEC’ which is an industry facing testing and evaluation centre for novel medical devices.

More recently, Ray joined UHB’s Ophthalmology Research Group, and enjoys working at the cutting edge of research across various scientific projects that are effectively using routinely collected data to develop and validate innovative Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools and technologies, that will ultimately improve how care is delivered across the NHS.
