Joanne Plumb is the Director of Research, Development and Innovation at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust.  A nurse by background, Jo completed her nurse training in Manchester, before specialising as an ITU nurse at Harefield Hospital where she developed her career in transplantation and research.

Jo then joined UHB in 1991 and has since held various senior positions including Deputy Research and Development Manager and Clinical Manager of the NIHR/Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Facility. As Director of Research, Development and Innovation, Jo is responsible for the operational management and delivery of research activity at UHB and regularly advises on research and development operations both nationally and regionally.

She has presented and published at several national and international research meetings on research and development process and research workforce capacity planning leading on the UKCRFN intensity tool.  Jo is also a member of the UHB workforce, EDI and Inclusion leadership team.

Joanne is interested in looking at how routinely collected clincial data can be used to support the delivery of research, and particularly, how data can be used to identify suitable patients for trials.  Jo is also interested in understanding how large clinical datasets can be studied in order to improve both productivity and effeciency across the healthcare system.  As a nurse who has used patient data in various projects throughout her career, she understands the value, importance and potential of the data that is held across the NHS. She is a ambassador for the national #DataSavesLives campaign.
