Neil Cockburn is a Clinical Research Fellow at the University of Birmingham investigating how data is used and created from clinical practice, from service quality improvements to research.

Services that use data to continuously learn and improve, assisted by infrastructure and with dedicated capabilities for using data, can be considered learning health systems, but the interaction between the complex social system of healthcare and increasingly sophisticated data science technologies presents many challenges before the promise of these technologies can be realised.

He is a public health registrar training in the West Midlands, having studied medicine at the University of Manchester.
