What is it?

A guide to help people use AI chatbots more safely for health reasons.

Why should I care?

AI chatbots hold great promise in improving access to health information and are already widely used for personal health reasons. Given most AI chatbots were created as ‘general purpose’, there remains limitations to their use in health. This guide aims to help people understand how AI chatbots can be used for health benefit but also how risks can be mitigated.

Does it impact healthcare?

Definitely! This guide aims to provide support to patients about how to best use AI chatbots for health reasons. The guide also has relevance to healthcare professionals looking to provide advice to their patients who may have used, or be interested in using, AI chatbots during their healthcare journey.

About the presenter:

Dr Elinor Laws is a Public Health doctor and academic based at the University of Birmingham, UK. Through her academic work and role as co-chair of the Faculty of Public Health AI and Digital Public Health Special Interest Group, Dr Laws considers not only the implications of AI to us as individuals, but also what this means for society, our health services, and the health inequality that we know to exist across the world. Building on work including the STANDING Together project, Dr Laws advocates for the value of adopting a population perspective when developing and implementing AI in healthcare, including the importance of integrating public voices throughout the process to ensure that everyone can benefit from safe and effective AI.
