Health Data Research Innovation Gateway

Gateway to health data and tools for research

Search, discover and request access to hundreds of datasets, tools and resources for your research. Join the thousands of researchers and scientists worldwide who are already using the Gateway for research and scientific discovery. Health datasets in the UK are held by thousands of different organisations. It can, therefore, be difficult for researchers and innovators to discover what datasets exist.

The Gateway was established in 2020 as a common entry point for researchers and innovators to discover and request access to UK health-related datasets. The Gateway lists information about each dataset, helping researchers and innovators to decide whether a dataset could be useful for their research.

UK Health Data Research Alliance

The UK Health Data Research Alliance (the ‘Alliance’) is an independent alliance of leading healthcare and research organisations united to establish best practice for the ethical use of UK health data for research at scale.

The Alliance is co-ordinated by Health Data Research UK (HDR UK) and is part of the UK-wide capability for the responsible use of health data for research and innovation, funded by the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund (ISCF).

The Alliance aims to accelerate progress in health and care by encouraging widespread and responsible access to structured and unstructured clinical, administrative, imaging, genomic and other molecular data.

The HDR UK Phenotype Library

The HDR UK Phenotype Library is a comprehensive, open access resource providing the research community with information, tools and phenotyping algorithms for UK electronic health records.

The HDR UK Phenotype Library is a platform to host phenotyping algorithms and harness their power for research. Our aim is to provide researchers with the “GitHub of phenotyping”: an open platform for creation, storage, dissemination, re-use, evaluation, and citation of curated algorithms and metadata. Our goal is for this to be a place where researchers can share their own work, benefit from what others have shared, and even build new collaborations.

Health Data Research Hubs

The Health Data Research Hubs provide a rich toolkit of healthcare datasets, infrastructure and expertise that enable users to identify, access, understand and use data to improve people’s lives.

The Health Data Research Hubs are collaborations of leading universities, NHS Foundation Trusts and other non-academic partners that use their tools knowledge and expertise to facilitate the use of health data for beneficial research purposes. Each Hub is a centre of excellence supporting researchers to maximise the insights and innovations developed using this data.

BHF Data Science Centre

Improving the public’s cardiovascular health through the power of large-scale data and advanced analytics across the UK.

The BHF Data Science Centre is a partnership between Health Data Research UK (HDR UK) and the British Heart Foundation (BHF), and sits within HDR UK.

We work with a wide range of partners including patients, public, clinicians, researchers and NHS organisations to help them carry out research using health data into the causes, prevention and treatment of all diseases of the heart and circulation (such heart attacks, stroke and vascular dementia). We do this to ensure new advances in treatment and care for diseases of the heart and circulation get to the patient as quickly as possible.

Open Science and Open Code

We are helping to accelerate science through open source and open code, enabling vital discoveries that save lives.

We have brought together over 150 repositories of open standards, data and source code, tackling some of the most important challenges in wrangling multi-modal data and generating replicable insights.

Founded on the FAIR principles and open reproducible science, we believe that all research and development activities will be able to maximise their limited resources and ultimately their impact, through open practices – open standards, open data, open access, open source and open innovation..

HDR Global

HDR Global is a data science programme that seeks to assist with data science skills and enable trustworthy data access, re-use and analysis in regions, communities and disease areas, where evidence to tackle threats to public health is lacking.

Our goals:

  • Enable research that tackles locally-set, priority health challenges by improving capture and analysis of all forms of health-relevant data
  • Address inequity in where data is collected and who benefits from the evidence
  • Connect expertise and share technology, standards, policies, and solutions that work between different projects, teams and networks in the Global South
