THE MIDLANDS CXIO COMMUNITY OF PRACTICE
The Midlands CXIO Community of Practice (known as: Midlands CXIO Network) is a regional network of CCIOs, Chief Nursing Information Officers (CNIOs), Clinical Safety Officers (CSOs) and other clinicians interested in digital transformation from NHS Organisations across the East and West Midlands regions of England, UK.
Clinical staff from across the network work with the front line clinical staff and middle management to empower teams and drive forward digital transformation across the NHS.
The members of our Midlands CXIO network work collaboratively to share knowledge and best practice, which ultimately improves the quality and safety of care that is delivered across our regional NHS organisations through implementing digital transformation.
The Midlands CXIO Community of Practice is hosted by Health Data Research UK (HDR UK) Midlands and delivered in partnership with NHS England (Midlands).


OUR AIMS AND OBJECTIVES
The aim of the network is to improve the quality and safety of patient care that is delivered by our regional NHS organisations through digital transformation.
Our three high level objectives are:
- To drive digital transformation throughout the NHS
- To share learning, knowledge and expertise across our network
- To develop regional and national partnerships to maximise opportunities for our regional membership organisations
MIDLANDS CXIO MEMBERSHIP
Membership of the Midlands CXIO Community of Practice comprises of the CCIOs, CNIOs, CSOs and/or equivalent nominated senior clinical individuals from each of our regional NHS organisations.
Clinical Staff from our regional Integrated Care Boards (ICBs) are also members of the Midlands CXIO Community of Practice. The Midlands regional ICBs are:

- Coventry and Warwickshire
- Derby and Derbyshire
- Herefordshire and Worcestershire
- Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland
- Lincolnshire
- Northamptonshire
- Nottingham and Nottinghamshire

- Staffordshire and Stoke on Trent


OUR NETWORK MEETINGS
Our Midlands CXIO Community of Practice Meetings take place bi-monthly, for 1 hour, usually at lunchtime (between 1 – 2pm). Meetings are held virtually via Teams.

Biography
Gurnak is a NHS General Practitioner whose career spans a diverse portfolio of clinical, leadership, educational, and advisory roles. Alongside his work as a practising GP, he serves as the Deputy Chief Clinical Information Officer for Leicester, Leicestershire, and Rutland ICB, where he is at the forefront of digital transformation in healthcare. His work focuses on utilising the power of technology to improve the quality, efficiency, and accessibility of patient care, ensuring innovation delivers real-world benefits for both patients and healthcare professionals.
Driven by a commitment to reducing health inequalities, Gurnak is a passionate advocate for creating a healthcare system where digital advancements do not exacerbate existing disparities but instead become tools for closing the gap. He believes that technology, when designed and implemented with purpose, has the potential to empower patients, improve access to care, and deliver more equitable health outcomes. Central to his ethos is the principle that patients must always remain at the heart of any transformation – their needs, experiences, and voices guiding the way.
Beyond his leadership in digital health, Gurnak is recognised for his dedication to mentoring and supporting colleagues across the NHS, sharing his expertise to foster a culture of collaboration and continuous improvement. He works tirelessly to ensure that digital healthcare systems are intuitive, inclusive, and sustainable, bridging the gap between innovation and practical application.

Mr Conor McGee
Chief Nursing Information Officer

Biography
Conor is a forward-thinking Chief Nursing Information Officer (CNIO) at Lincolnshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, where he plays a key role in leading the digital transformation of clinical services. With a clear focus on the safe and secure implementation of cutting-edge technologies, he bridges the critical gap between healthcare delivery and digital innovation, ensuring that technology serves as an enabler of improved patient outcomes and streamlined clinical operations.
Conor combines his clinical expertise with an understanding of healthcare informatics to identify and drive opportunities for integrating advanced digital tools into clinical workflows. By enhancing efficiency, improving patient care, and ensuring seamless interoperability across systems, he helps the Trust remain at the forefront of healthcare innovation. His strategic vision ensures that technology is not only implemented effectively but also adopted in a way that is practical and sustainable for frontline staff.
As CNIO, Conor acts as a key link between IT and clinical teams, ensuring that the technological needs of healthcare professionals are understood and met. He is instrumental in the adoption of innovative digital solutions, leading on staff training initiatives to foster confidence and competence in using new systems. He also ensures that digital platforms are rigorously tested, continuously optimised, and aligned with the Trust’s goals of delivering safe, efficient, and patient-centred care.
Conor’s role requires him to translate complex technological advancements into meaningful, practical solutions for clinical teams. Through his dedication to empowering staff and integrating technology into healthcare delivery, Conor ensures that the Trust not only keeps pace with advancements in the digital landscape but also leverages them to provide the highest standards of care for its patients.

Mr Kevin Dunn
Co-Director of HDR UK Midlands

Biography
Kevin is Co-Director of HDR UK Midlands, a network uniting NHS, academia, industry, and the third sector to enhance NHS services through health data. Beginning his NHS career as a Youth Trainee in 1998, he gained expertise in Health Informatics, Oncology, Research & Development, and Innovation Management.
An initial recruit to the National Cancer Research Network (NCRN), Kevin developed a clinical trial recruitment database. He later established the UK’s first national cancer multidisciplinary team for Ewing’s Sarcomas, sharing clinical data across the UKs 4 nations. Previous roles include Head of Research & Innovation at a Specialist NHS Trust, and Head of Operations for the West Midlands Academic Health Science Network (AHSN).
At the University of Birmingham, Kevin teaches on the MSc Health Data Science course and has also recently initiated the apprenticeship programme within the College of Medicine and Health’s Research Office. He co-founded the Midlands CCIO network and strategically supports the TARGetAMR network using genomics to combat antimicrobial resistance (AMR).
Passionate about community, he leads Ramblers charity walks and formerly chaired a kidney patient charity. His interests include photography, cooking, running, gardening, travel, and yoga. Ambitious and visionary, Kevin is committed to transforming the NHS for the benefit of all.
